Description
Mapping Pathramangalam’s Pottery Heritage Through a Community Learning Space
is an architectural proposal aimed at revitalizing the 300 + year old Kumbhara Pottery culture
of Pathramangalam, Velur Panchayat, Thrissur, Kerala. The village’s traditional Pottery
practice is gradually losing its visibility, continuity, and economic value due to declining
knowledge transfer, inadequate infrastructure, and environmental issues caused by fragmented
individual kilns.
The project reimagines Pottery not as a static heritage to be preserved, but as a living cultural
practice that can support learning, production, livelihood, and community development.
The proposed community learning environment brings together artisans,
students, artists, visitors, and the local community through a Pottery institute, shared
workshops and kiln facilities, heritage museum, artist village, exhibition and retail spaces,
and gathering areas.
The design is rooted in Pathramangalam’s community memory, local craftsmanship, materiality,
and the Panchabhootha journey of earth, water, air, fire, and space. Locally sourced clay,
Pottery , clay rings, and traditional construction knowledge are translated into architectural
elements. Through this integration, the project seeks to strengthen cultural continuity,
artisan livelihoods, shared knowledge, and the future of Pathramangalam as a living
centre of Pottery .
