Description

As urbanisation fragments natural habitats, birds increasingly lose the conditions necessary for migration, nesting, feeding, and refuge. Corridor of Wings questions whether architecture can become habitat rather than object. The project proposes a bare-bone ecological framework where built mass is minimised and natural processes define space. Vertical wetlands, native vegetation, nesting structures, and bird-friendly materials create adaptable habitats for avian movement and seasonal occupation. Located at Gorewada, Nagpur, the project responds to a landscape of forest, wetlands, water bodies, and open habitats that support resident and migratory bird species. Four habitat towers are organised according to different ecological sensitivities, from urban-tolerant species to highly vulnerable forest and wetland birds. Human movement is controlled through trails, observation decks, learning spaces, and an avian gallery, allowing awareness without dominating the habitat. By reducing human interference and reconnecting fragmented habitats, the intervention positions architecture as ecological infrastructure—supporting biodiversity while allowing human and avian systems to coexist.
