Description
Gandhipuram is the busiest junction in Coimbatore, is a home to three major bus stands Central, Town, and SETC/Interstate bus stand , with a metro line also planned to pass through it. Right now, these three stands work completely separately. To go from one to another, people have to walk through live traffic, because there are no proper footpaths or safe crossings. There’s barely any seating, so people sit on the floor. Signage is unclear, so first-time travellers don’t know where to go. Buses coming from other states drop passengers straight onto the road. Even drivers don’t have a proper place to rest.
This thesis solves the problem by separating buses from people. Buses stay on the ground, exactly where they are now. But everything meant for people walking, waiting, connecting between bus stands and the metro is lifted onto a new level above the traffic. This upper level becomes a safe, THE ELEVATED DATUM shaded public space that connects all three bus stands and the metro
concourse, without anyone having to cross a road turning a chaotic, unsafe junction into a place that actually works for the people who use it every day.
