Charles Correa Foundation has documented and listed more than 900 heritage buildings in Panaji which contribute to the historic fabric of the city. The process to identify these structures was based on a detailed survey conducted on each individual structure to note its historic and architectural relevance, along with its contribution to the immediate streetscape. These structures are graded into Grade I, Grade II (A) and Grade II (B), Grade III and Grade IV with respect to their significance and value and is currently in the process of assessment by the Town and Country Planning Department, Goa. The heritage areas are Sao Tome. Fontainhas, Mala, Portais, CBD (Central Business District) Altinho, Campal, Caranzalem and Ribander.
The preservation list will play a vital role in the shaping of these heritage sites. The guidelines to be formulated will be context specific with reference to the grades. As observed the new developments within the heritage precincts do not respect the context entirely, and therefore there is a strong need for context specific heritage guidelines.
